The Church Fathers on this verse

7 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

Fear may appear to be a characteristic of the frail, yet the Lord serves as a refuge for those who revere Him. The Name of the Lord, exalted across the nations, stands as a fortress for all who honor Him. Moreover, He unveils His promises to them, as the Gentiles and the farthest reaches of the earth become the heritage of Christ.

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

The gospel covenant represents the path to salvation. It serves to fulfill the entirety of God's law by granting the righteous the pleasure of what truly brings them joy. As He states, “shall show them,” meaning He will lead them into the fulfillment of their deepest longings.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Simmachus and Theodotion provided a clearer translation that states: The secret of the Lord is for those who revere Him, and His covenant will be revealed to them. Furthermore, we learn that the Lord expresses through the Prophet Isaiah, ‘My ordinances belong to Me alone, and also to them.’ He discloses these truths not to everyone, but to those who honor Him, unveiling the intent of His sacred proclamations. Indeed, the translation of the Seventy also declares, ‘the Lord supports those who revere Him,’ granting them strength and triumph over their foes.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

The might of the Lord is a refuge for those who revere Him, serving as strength and protective barriers. In His covenant, the Law will be disclosed to them; indeed, the Law of God will be unveiled to those who honor the Lord—what is it? That God serves as a stronghold for His faithful. This is the promise embedded in the law of God. The covenant may also refer to the divine insights that are directly revealed by God, guiding those who fear Him in their actions and providing a clear understanding of His sacred directives. The law likewise reveals profound truths with a sincere purpose to those who engage with it and adhere to its precepts.

The translations by Simmachus and Theodotion convey this as the mystery of the Lord will be revealed to those who honor Him, and His covenant will be disclosed to them. It is indeed feasible to heed the Lord Himself, as stated by Theodoret, who, through Isaiah, proclaims, "My secrets are mine and mine" (Isaiah 24:16).

Cassiodorus the Senator

6th centuryChurch Father

The Influence of Fear The apprehension of humanity acknowledges doubt, while the reverence of God provides a solid foundation for hope.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

People who revere the Lord are consistently rooted in righteousness because their trust is not placed in transient matters, but rather anchored in God's assistance. The strength of the Almighty rests upon those who honor Him. Thus, those who walk in the fear of the Lord find security in Him, like a solid foundation. This assurance arises from the covenant of the Lord, which affirms that He is the fortress for those who revere Him. Those who honor God are mindful of the truth that He has entered into a covenant with them, pledging to be their God. Like a loving Father, when they adhere to His commandments, they are assured by this covenant that they can rest their hopes steadfastly upon Him, the most secure foundation.

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

The Lord empowers those who revere Him through acts of salvation, and according to His promises, He will reveal Himself to them in His divine majesty, as He proclaimed, ‘I will love him, and I myself will appear to him’ (John 14:21). Christ, who is God, possesses supreme power, might, and authority, and He sustains the Church, oversees its works, and judges the nations.
