Augustine of Hippo

His labor will leave an enduring inheritance of a restored body.

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

His descendants will possess the land, referring to the deeds that enabled him to attain the spiritual realm. His offspring will represent the progeny of the righteous, signifying those who are born in alignment with God's purpose.

Theodoret of Cyrus

The prophetic message assures those who adhere to these commandments that they will experience joy for their spirit and blessings upon their descendants. Their spirit will be grounded in goodness, and their offspring will inherit the land. For the Jewish people, as well as those engaged in public life, the ability to bear children and leave heirs is highly esteemed; thus, the Prophet encourages them to elevate their lives through virtuous actions.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

The spirit of the individual who reveres the Lord, upon departing from the physical form at death, will discover itself amidst the exquisite blessings that no eye has beheld or ear has heard, as Paul articulates. Moreover, his descendants shall inherit the land promised to the Hebrews, as procreation is highly valued. Therefore, David inspires men to hold reverence for God by the assurance of fruitful offspring, suggesting that those who honor God will be blessed with numerous children, who will become heirs to the land and all that belongs to their parents. In this context, the mental offspring — the teachings and the learners of them — can also be understood here. Thus, David illustrates that it is not solely the one who fears the Lord who will find salvation, but rather the children of the Spirit and His disciples who will inherit the territory designated for the humble.

Cassiodorus the Senator

6th centuryChurch Father

The Blessing of Righteousness When the just are freed from their earthly bodies, they do not instantly receive the complete glory that awaits the saints at their resurrection. Instead, as the psalmist expresses, their souls will be joined with the blessings that are good. Though this ultimate reward remains deferred—one which "eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man" (1 Cor 2:9)—they currently bask in the steadfast assurance of the divine reward that is to come.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

This represents the second aspect of well-being for the individual who reveres God, centered on the truth that his spirit, meaning the person who fears God, will reside in blessings, meaning he will experience goodness not briefly or momentarily, but enduringly and steadfastly. This assertion is profoundly truthful, as it is written, "all things work together for good" to those who love God (Rom. 8:28). Consequently, the individual who fears God will consistently partake in blessings. Whether fortune smiles upon him, he will bask in success; should adversity strike, he will possess the strength of patience and the assurance of magnificent rewards that await him in the heavenly realm.

Thus, he will forever thrive, and not only will he find favor, but his descendants will also inherit the earth, living in tranquility and safety without fear of harm. As stated earlier, all things collaborate for the good of those who love God. Therefore, even the trials they face will be transformed into joy.

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

The spirit of the just shall reside in the joy of everlasting life, and his offspring, which is the physical manifestation born from the flesh, will, at the second coming of Christ, share in the inheritance of the land of the living alongside the spirit. For he who sows unto decay shall be raised in a state of immortality (1 Cor. 15:50).
