John Chrysostom

Another translator observes that I will remember Your name throughout all generations; therefore the nations will continuously praise You. A different translator notes that for this reason, the nations will confess to You. The prophet elucidated the magnitude of the Church’s power by referencing the reach of the earth, the enormity of the universe, and the multitude of nations that have submitted to her authority. Now, he highlights the Church's dignity from a distinct perspective, indicating that it will not only encompass the entirety of creation but will also transcend all time. He declares that Your memory shall be eternal, recorded in our texts, imprinted in our society, and embedded in our commandments.

Observe how he foresees the lasting nature of his own message—he conveys this sentiment by stating, ‘I will remember Your name from generation to generation.’ Even in death, he professes, I will continue to sing to You; though my body may perish, the written word will endure, and the law remains eternal. ‘Therefore the nations will also praise You.’ The prophet initiates his declaration with Christ and concludes with Him. 'Therefore,' for what? Because You have performed such great deeds, established righteous leaders, restrained wickedness, cultivated goodness, united our nature with Yourself, and bestowed incomprehensible gifts—‘therefore’ the entirety of creation will offer praises to You, not for a brief moment or merely for ten, twenty, or a hundred years, nor just in isolated corners of the world, but from earth and sea, both populated and uninhabited lands, will give thanks in all epochs for the blessings received. Let us also express our gratitude for all these gifts to Christ, who is benevolent toward humanity, through whom and with whom to the Father, along with the Holy Spirit, be glory now and forever, and throughout all ages. Amen.

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

What is the purpose of confessing if it is done outside the sacred space? What significance does prayer hold if not lifted up from the mountaintop? I called upon the Lord with my voice, and He answered me from His holy mountain. What mountain is this? It is the one referred to as ‘A city set on a hill cannot be hidden’ (Matthew 5:14). Which mountain? It is the one seen by Daniel, where a small stone emerged and obliterated all the kingdoms of the earth, spreading across the entire world (Dan. 2:34-35). Therefore, let those who seek to receive grace pray there; let them request that their supplications be heard; let those who desire forgiveness confess in that place. Thus, nations will praise You forever and ever, in a kingdom without end.

For in this eternal existence, it is true that there will be no more sorrow for sins; yet, within the exaltation of God from that eternal City above, there will be a continuous acknowledgment of the joy found in such happiness. To this very City, another Psalm declares, ‘Glorious things are spoken of you, O City of God,’ she who is the Bride of Christ, the Queen, the King's daughter, and the King's beloved; it is for this reason that the nations commend themselves to her. The hearts of all, now illuminated by perfect love, are revealed and laid bare, so that she may fully understand her entirety, which remains hidden in many aspects while she is here.

Basil the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

At the end of the entire discourse, it is presented as a declaration on behalf of the Church: I will remember ‘Thy name in every kindred and generation.’ What does this remembrance of the Church signify? It is the affirmation of the peoples.

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

Your name will be honored in every lineage and era through the sacred Scriptures, as the name of God is upheld in these holy texts. Consequently, people will proclaim Your glory throughout the ages by sharing the message. This proclamation is directed towards Christ, as those who preach the Scriptures recount the miraculous acts of God that the Lord has performed throughout history and instruct future generations.

Jerome of Stridon

In Hebrew it is stated, 'I will remember Your name throughout all generations. Therefore, the nations shall glorify You forever.' While the passage we interpret as 'shall glorify You' was rendered by Symmachus as 'shall praise You,' the queen who stood beside the King in radiant attire, instructed to forsake her people and her father's household, was reminded that 'instead of your fathers shall be your sons.' Aware of her potential for immense glory and the blessings that await her, she addresses the Bridegroom and vows to consistently remember His name across all generations. We witness her promise realized. As one who identifies as a Christian, she has also bestowed upon us the title of Christians, a new identity through which all nations will find blessing.

Her remembrance encompasses not only one generation but all, signifying either all nations or the two groups of Jews and Gentiles. How much more significant then, if the name of the Lord is honored across these two generations, such that those in the embrace of the Church will continually glorify the Lord eternally. Likewise, when you, O Principia, my beloved daughter among the saints, are welcomed among the virgins before the King and rejoice the Bridegroom of the noble houses in His honor, do remember me, who conveyed to you, through divine revelation, the significance of this Psalm, and say, 'I will remember Your name.' Once you grasp even a portion of the Song of Songs, you will be equipped to comprehend its entirety, provided that life remains our companion.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The Psalmist, having predicted this, promises to celebrate God's name alongside the faithful of his time throughout all ages. The three translators render it thus: “I will sing Thy name in every generation, because the nations shall sing unto Thee forever and ever.” The Prophet declares that all the nations of the earth, inspired by the song I have composed and enlightened by the salvation that has been anticipated since ancient times, shall continuously offer praises to Thee, the Generous Benefactor and Source of all blessings.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

I will honor Your name across every tribe and generation. These declarations are directed towards Christ by the Church, as the esteemed Basil articulates. For, he states, being privileged through You, O Lord, to receive such blessings, I shall remember and exalt Your name. The recurrence of the term signifies an unending presence and a seamless existence. Indeed, the Church perpetually honors the name of Christ, as it is identified by His name, Christian, and as the gathering of Christians. Therefore, humanity will extol You eternally. He asserts that, O Lord, due to the tremendous care and grace You have bestowed upon me, my numerous brethren in Christ will glorify You not only in this present age but also in the age to come, which is the age of all ages, most excellent and everlasting.

The Great Basil states: What does it mean to memorialize the Church? It signifies the glorification by the nations. Chrysostom further illustrates this dignity, indicating that not only will the Church spread throughout the entire cosmos, but also through every age. The memory of this will remain immortal, inscribed in our worthy records, documented in civic engagements, and decrees. Despite my passing, I shall continue to sing praises to You even beyond death. The body may perish, but the writings will endure. Thus, the nations will glorify You. I conclude where I began, with Christ; for what reasons? Because You have performed countless magnificent deeds; because You have established righteous leaders; because You have eradicated wickedness and fostered virtue; because You have assumed our humanity; for all Your immeasurable blessings. St Gregory of Thessalonica, in his initial discourse on the Introit, connects these phrases to the Theotokos, stating: Do you not observe that all of creation honors this Virgin Mother? Not only in ages past but also for all eternity? Hence, we must believe that She will cease not to confer good upon all creation through endless ages. Additionally, the aforementioned phrase, 'I will remember Your name in every birth and generation,' is proclaimed on behalf of the Mother of God; hence, it is always recited before the Gospel during the prayer services for Her, titled prokeimenon. Why is this so? As St Mark of Ephesus points out, these words of David contain a prophecy about the Theotokos, fulfilled in Her (as concluded in the ecclesiastical commentary by Simeon of Solunsk). These words foretell the hymn of the Theotokos, wherein the Lord's name is recognized, declaring: For from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me; and holy is His name. Take note, beloved, of the harmonious connection in these words with those expressed by the Virgin. Here, the name of God is recollected, and there the name; here the genus and genus, and there all the genera.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

These words are unsuitable for Solomon, as it is well established how he tarnished his legacy through vice. Likewise, his son Rehoboam is also unworthy of remembrance, having squandered the finest portions of the kingdom due to his arrogant folly. To affirm the truth of this saying, we must look to Christ, whose legacy is eternally blessed and whose kingdom is everlasting. Though adversaries may rise up from all sides attempting to dismantle it, every knee shall bow before Him—be it in heaven, on earth, or in the abyss—until He places all opposing powers and authorities beneath His feet. Neither the wrath of the ruler of darkness nor the combined efforts of the world can extinguish or obscure His name.

They have not hindered His name from spreading among His followers; rather, His glory resounds throughout the entire cosmos and is proclaimed across generations, nations, and languages. It is therefore our responsibility to earnestly strive that this sacred name is never silent among us, ensuring that His memory remains immortal—etched in our writings, reflected in our way of life, and demonstrated in our actions. Consider how David also anticipates the everlasting nature of his prophecy. When he proclaimed, "I will sing Thy name in every kindred and generation," he expressed this: although I may perish, I will continue to sing unto Thee even beyond my death; my body may decay, yet my writings shall stand as an eternal testament.
