Sirach 32

Old TestamentTheosis · English Bible

1If you are appointed as the leader (at the table), do not exalt yourself; be like one of them; [2] take care of them and take your seat likewise. 2And when you have fulfilled all your needs, recline, [3] so that you may be glad because of them, and for the sake of good conduct, you shall receive a crown. 3Speak, elder, for it is fitting for you, [5] with precise knowledge, but do not hinder the music. 4Where there is poetry, do not pour out complaints, and do not philosophize at an inappropriate time! 5A seal of ruby on a golden ornament (is) a concert of music at a wine feast; 6an emerald seal on a crafted work of gold (is) the melody of music with sweet wine. 7Speak, young man, when it is your duty, but only when you have been asked [11a] twice; 8sum up a word, [12a] say much in few words; [12b] be as one who knows and yet remains silent. 9Do not act as a ruler among the nobles, and where the elders are, do not speak much. 10Before thunder comes the lightning, and before humility comes favor. 11At the right time, stand up and do not be the last; go home and do not be reckless! 12There, you may dance [16] and reflect, but do not sin through proud speech. 13Moreover, praise the One who made you and who fills you with His goods. 14Whoever fears the Lord will accept instruction, and those who seek Him will find favor. 15Whoever seeks the law will be fulfilled by it, but the hypocrite will stumble over it. 16Those who fear the Lord will find justice, and righteous deeds will shine like light. 17A sinful man avoids correction, and according to his liking, he finds a verdict. 18A man of counsel overlooks no thought, but a proud and arrogant man does not retreat. 19Do nothing without advice, and when you act, do not regret it. 20Do not walk on a path full of obstacles, and do not stumble on rocky ground. 21Do not trust an unexplored path, 22and guard yourself in front of your children. 23In all your work, trust yourself; for this is keeping the commandments. 24He who believes in the law heeds the commandments, and he who trusts in the Lord will suffer no loss.
