Be careful that your observance of Lent does not shift from the limitation of common desires to the quest for new delights. Ensure that in place of regular wine, you do not seek out enticing beverages made from fruits not derived from the vine, which are not permitted during this season. Likewise, do not choose meatless meals while excessively focusing on their variety and taste. The pleasures that may seem trivial at other times can become the focus for some during this period, turning the observance of the forty-day fast from a means of controlling ordinary appetites into an opportunity for satisfying new desires. Dear brothers, remain alert and guard against such tendencies.

Moderation should accompany fasting, and since overindulgence is sinful, we must be cautious of anything that stimulates our cravings. It is not the diverse types of food that should be scorned, but the indulgence of our flesh that needs to be restrained. Even the revered King David acknowledged his inappropriate yearning for plain water.
