Be mindful that the observance of Lent should not shift from the discipline of typical desires to the pursuit of novel delights. Ensure that instead of regular wine, you refrain from seeking out enticing beverages made from fruits other than the vine, which are prohibited during this season, and that you do not focus excessively on the diversity and taste of meatless dishes. What might appear frivolous to chase at other times of the year is sometimes earnestly pursued during this period, leading the observance of the forty days' fast to transform from a means of restraining ordinary desires into an opportunity for indulging new fancies. Dear brethren, remain alert and guard against such tendencies. Moderation should accompany fasting.
