The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

A soldier noticed Jonathan and remarked that his father had placed a curse on the people, declaring, “Cursed is the man who eats bread today,” leading to the weariness of the people. Jonathan reacted by expressing dismay at his father’s actions, questioning the meaning of "confound," which could imply devastation or ruin for everyone involved. When the oath was violated, there was an unsettling silence, and no one felt able to identify the wrongdoer; this was a significant transgression, for not only did those who broke the oath share in the sin, but those who were aware of it and chose to conceal it were equally culpable.
