One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Why did God refrain from explicitly stating, "Go and anoint David as my king," instead choosing the phrase, "One of the sons of Jesse"? This was likely to prevent David from experiencing a fate similar to that of Joseph. Just as Joseph’s brothers conspired against him upon discovering his future kingship, there was concern that David’s brothers might act in a similar manner. Therefore, obscurity served as a protective measure for David.
