One Church Father comments on this verse

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

Through His humility, we have received abundance. For 'the Lord brings low and lifts up.' To grasp this concept fully, let us continue: 'He humbles and raises up'; truly, He humbles the arrogant while uplifting the meek. As stated in another passage, 'God opposes the proud, but bestows grace upon the humble' (1 Pet. 5:5), which captures the essence of the message delivered by Him whose name signifies grace.
