The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

After addressing the transgression, the Lord enacts judgment with fierce intensity: ‘Therefore I swear,’ says He, ‘by the house of Eli, that the iniquity of the house of Eli shall never be atoned for by sacrifices or grain offerings.’ Do you perceive the depth of the anger and the punishment devoid of any chance for mercy? He asserts that destruction is certain, not just for him and his descendants, but for the entirety of his household, leaving no means to mend this affliction.
