Theodoret of Cyrus
The author further criticizes Asa for ‘not seeking the Lord, but consulting the physician’ during his illness. After elaborating on this in the Fourth Book of Kings (3 Sam. 15:23), I will now interpret the subsequent events.
And Asa fell sick in the nine and thirtieth year of his reign, of a most violent pain in his feet, and yet in his illness he did not seek the Lord, but rather trusted in the skill of physicians.

STAVROPHILA. A person finds improvement in their character during times of illness; for when one is unwell, they are less distracted by greed or sinful desires, unlike a healthy individual. They are not ensnared by addiction, do not seek prestige, and hold wealth in contempt. The fatigued body rarely succumbs to chaos; instead, it is often in well-being and abundance that a person may become obstinate and careless about virtuous deeds. ANGEL. You are aware of this truth, and you have rightly brought it to mind. Yet, you ought to recall it more frequently and act on it when needed. What good is a tool if it remains unused? What benefit does a remedy provide if it is not administered, or what purpose does a knife serve if it is not employed to cut?
The cross and afflictions serve as effective remedies against the temptations of the adversary, just as the surgeon’s incision proves valuable; however, should you neglect to engage with them, you render them ineffective for yourself. What brings discomfort to the body acts as a cure for the spirit: ailments may bruise the flesh but can restore the soul; frailty of the body diminishes the grip of lust. Why not embrace them with gratitude? When water is delivered to extinguish a house engulfed in flames, the homeowner welcomes it as assistance in quelling the fire. Similarly, when the flames of sin ignite within your heart, the Lord graciously showers you with an abundance of trials. Alas, for those who, amidst their suffering, fail to transform their lives and thus forfeit the means of salvation provided to them. This is why Holy Scripture expresses astonishment, stating: ‘And Asa became sick in his feet in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, and his sickness ascended to his upper body; but in his affliction, he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians.’ This outlines the royal path of the Lord’s Cross, which leads to everlasting life.
