I must acknowledge that the author of the book of Kings left out some details which are included here. Upon Jehoshaphat’s return from the battle highlighted there, ‘Jihuiah the son of Ananias the prophet came out to meet him and said to him, “O king Jehoshaphat, do you assist the wicked, or do you make alliances with those who are despised by the Lord? For this reason the wrath of the Lord was upon you; yet good deeds were found in you, for you have removed the Asherah poles from the land of Judah and aligned your heart to seek the Lord”’ (2 Chronicles 19:2-3). This illustrates that prior righteous actions can mitigate the consequences of our sins, as the Just Judge measures judgment based on both past and present deeds.
