John of Tobolsk

17th centuryChurch Father

At that moment, an extraordinary command was issued on the battlefield: the leader instructed that church singers be positioned at the forefront of the army. These singers, moving before the troops in the splendor of the sacred setting, lifted their voices in praise to the Lord, singing the psalm: ‘Confess the Lord, for He is good, His mercy is everlasting’ (Psalm 135:1)! What a remarkable sight: the king and his forces approached the fray as if a bishop were entering a church accompanied by the clergy! This was indeed a phenomenal occurrence, and in the context of warfare, it might seem almost laughable to place defenseless, unarmed singers ahead of those who bore arms. Yet, the presence of God supported Jehoshaphat, empowering him with the mighty weapons of faith in the Almighty. True faith is graciously reciprocated by immense blessings from above.
