2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

He who "scatters the hoards of nations, sweeps away the thoughts of men, and puts away the counsels of princes" (Psalms 32:10), "turning back the wise, and curbing their counsels" (Isaiah 44:25), has caused adversaries to turn against each other.

John of Tobolsk

17th centuryChurch Father

As the worshipers began to exalt the Most High, the Lord secretly ignited conflict among the Ammonites and Moabites, leading them to turn on one another until none were left standing. When Jehoshaphat's army reached a vantage point, they discovered only the lifeless bodies of their foes scattered on the ground, with no survivors. In the aftermath of the enemy’s destructive infighting, Jehoshaphat beheld an abundance of valuable spoils—rich garments and precious artifacts. He instructed his people to collect the treasures, which took three days to gather due to their overwhelming quantity. This illustrates the unparalleled strength of genuine faith in God; in every circumstance of life, it prevails above all else—it is undeniably invincible! True faith is met with abundant grace from above. Perhaps this also reflects what is found in 1 Samuel 18:10.
