John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

These misfortunes, even with a thousand joys added to them, can still render David's existence filled with grief; yet the troubles that followed were such that it might seem true sorrows had only just begun. The afflictions faced by this monarch exceeded any myth or tragedy; he endured extraordinary and relentless hardships within his household, as if one calamity were constantly striving to assist another. Consider this: Amnon had a desire for his sister and, having acted upon that desire, he brought shame upon her. When Absalom became aware of this and invited all his brothers, including the transgressor, to a feast, he ordered his servants to kill him while they were eating and drinking.
