The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Fructuosus of Braga

7th centuryChurch Father

One should not depend on past purity, for even David, the most virtuous, and Solomon, the wisest, found their hearts clouded by their encounters with women. To prevent anyone from thinking their virtue is secure in the company of a female relative, consider how Tamar was violated by Amnon, who feigned illness. Therefore, both monks and nuns ought to uphold such a life of chastity that they can bear witness sincerely, not only to God but also to humanity, providing their communities with a standard of holiness.
