Initially, the soldiers turned against one another, creating a rift among themselves. Once they yielded to the king, following numerous kind entreaties, they once more distanced themselves and allied with Savaeus. Consequently, another conflict erupted even though the previous one was still unresolved.

Simultaneously, a fresh conflict arose among the people. The eleven tribes, which had largely postponed their meeting with David at Galgalah alongside the tribe of Judah, accused the latter of usurping the kingship. In response, Judah carelessly revealed its familial connection to David and insisted on being honored due to its greater numbers. Seizing this moment of disarray, Shebaiah from the tribe of Benjamin blew a trumpet, and the eleven tribes turned their backs on David in anger.
