One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

He acknowledged courage, even among his adversaries, believing it essential to demonstrate fairness not only to his supporters but also to those who rebelled against him. He had great respect for Avenir, the valiant chief of the opposition, who fought against him. When Avenir sought a truce, he graciously granted this request and celebrated him with a banquet. Upon Avenir's treacherous death, David felt deep sorrow and mourned for him, honoring his memory by participating in the funeral procession.
