The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

I will unleash flames upon the city of Teman and will secure the foundations of its protective walls. This city stands as the heart of Idumea; when it fell to foes, it was consumed by fire, and alongside it, the other towns were destroyed. Therefore, those who despise their brethren and rise against their kin, or against those who share a spiritual bond of unity and accord, will experience the same fate in fire and flame, for they are far removed from the glory of love.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

I will unleash flames upon Theban, and I will ignite the foundation of Batsara. I will dispatch the same Assyrians and Babylonians. The prophet designates them as fire due to their capacity to lay waste to the land. Teman and Batsara stand as the two principal cities of the Idumeans.
