Cyrill of Alexandria
However, I will not completely forsake the house of Israel, declares the Lord. I will command and disperse the house of Israel among all tongues, as it has been inscribed in the winds, and creation will not collapse upon the earth. By force, all the transgressors of my people shall face an end, proclaiming that they will not draw near or that wickedness will not befall us. The remnant of Israel shall be restored for the sake of the forefathers; they will not be subject to total destruction, and the line of Jacob shall not be completely obliterated. Rather, like those scattered by a wind, they shall be distributed among the nations. Yet, creation shall not be lowered to the earth, indicating that the descendants of Jacob will not suffer total ruin.

A portion of them who are graciously forgiven shall be delivered, for some returned from captivity during that period. They are saved through Christ, as a significant number of Jews came to believe. A remnant will also be redeemed in later days when a multitude of Gentiles are summoned. In response to the question, If Jacob is saved, against whom can the warnings be directed? it wisely asserts that judgment will not recklessly fall upon all without justification, and the consequences of wrath will be directed toward those who have committed grievous sins. This means that all human sins will be dealt with, as they proclaim, Do not approach us, nor shall evil come upon us, because some have become so morally corrupted that they viewed the holy prophets as peddlers of falsehoods, claiming that no prophecy would be fulfilled. This is illustrated by Jeremiah, who addressed God, saying, "They say to me, ‘Where is the word of the Lord? Let it come’" (Jeremiah 17:15). Consequently, those holding such beliefs carry a double burden: they are reprobate in various respects and perceive the truth as a mere fabrication. Furthermore, at the time of our Savior's advent, the Jewish leaders disregarded His teachings. Consequently, they heard: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you neither enter in yourselves, nor do you permit those who are entering to go in (Lk. 11:52; Mt. 23:13), and again: Woe to you, for you traverse sea and dry land and other things (Mt. 23:15). Therefore, they were not rightly acknowledged as children, having strayed from the dignity of their forebears, but were treated as if they were the offspring of Ethiopia; they also faced destruction through violence and endured punishment from the Judge due to their foolishness.
