John Chrysostom

Observe that upon receiving his request, he did not rush straight to the king's palace. Instead, he first offered profound gratitude to the Giver, unlike us who often overlook thankfulness in moments of triumph. He was different; he praised God, declaring, "Blessed be the name of the Lord from everlasting to everlasting." He acknowledges our transitory existence, yet we extend our blessings to Him not just for the present moment, but for all eternity, encompassing both the past and the future. We ought to consistently praise God, irrespective of our circumstances, for His Providence governs all creation.

Notice how in his act of thanksgiving, he reveals to whom the understanding of dreams belongs: “he has given me wisdom and power,” which signifies knowledge of all things and insight into what is to come. He states plainly that God is aware of all that exists; there is nothing beyond His knowledge. Therefore, is it merely foreknowledge that He possesses? Furthermore, the prophet does not say “He has,” but rather "He has wisdom and power," indicating that such attributes are inherent to God, reflecting His natural perfection.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Blessed be the name of the Lord God from eternity to eternity, for the blessings bestowed upon our ancestors in Egypt and upon us in Babylon. He is both wisdom and strength. Although God, in His divine wisdom and patience, has preserved the Babylonians and their allies just as He once did with the Egyptians, now He extends His mighty hand and strikes them in His stronghold, just as He did with Egypt.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Daniel praised the God of heaven, distinguishing Him from those on earth who, through demonic manipulation and trickery, afflict what is delicate and sacred. The deities that lack the power to create the heavens and the earth will ultimately fade away.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The prophet demonstrates his kindness in every matter, not merely crafting a song, but infusing it with the essence of his vision. He proclaims, "It is appropriate to offer continuous praise to the eternal God, the wellspring of wisdom and understanding, the sovereign who governs all with justice and goodness. He reveals the fragility of human success through shifts in circumstance, showcasing His dominion over all creation. When He appoints rulers, He can readily remove them, and He grants authority only to retract it whenever He chooses. He bestows wisdom and discernment, giving generously not only to everyone but especially to those who earnestly seek Him.

At His command, He uncovers unseen truths that have yet to manifest, hidden as if in profound depths, because they have not yet come to pass. As the ultimate Light dwelling in inaccessible brightness, He possesses perfect knowledge of all that lies in darkness."
