John Chrysostom

Let us explore whether Daniel gained insight from scientific inquiry or from the natural world. He refers to his ability to uncover profound and concealed truths. Notably, he does not claim to simply discover them, but rather to unveil these deep mysteries to others, which remain hidden from us due to the passage of time. He possesses knowledge of what lies in darkness, for the light dwells with Him. Consider his assertion: similarly, David observes, As her darkness is, so is her light (Psalm 138:12). This highlights the profundity of knowledge, suggesting that although darkness may exist, it is not dark to Him, for He embodies light. How, then, does He perceive what is shrouded in darkness? He does so as one who carries the light within Himself.

The light is always present with Him, as a lit lamp reveals all shadows; likewise, to God, nothing is obscured by darkness. Indeed, to Him, nothing is hidden; just as one with illuminated sight perceives everything around, He is the essence of light.

The One who unveils the depths, including dreams and their interpretations, as well as the king's evening thoughts, is the Light that pierces through darkness. He is aware of all that transpires within the illusions of the mind, depicted as darkness. In Him resides light, meaning He is also aware of the deeds performed by the righteous, who are symbolized by light.

To those to whom God unveils His profound mysteries, one may echo the sentiment: ‘O the depths of the riches of the wisdom and intelligence of God’ (Rom. 11:33). Such individuals, empowered by the Spirit residing within them, venture into the profoundness of God, unearthing hidden treasures within their souls and removing the worldly barriers that typically veil deep waters. They faithfully adhere to the Divine ordinance, which instructs: ‘Drink water from your vessels and from your spring treasures’ (Proverbs 5:15). Thus, it is shown that ‘knoweth that which is in darkness, and light dwelleth with Him’; here, darkness represents ignorance, while light stands for knowledge and understanding. In this manner, as wrongdoing does not escape God's sight, righteousness envelops Him completely.

It can further be interpreted that darkness embodies all that is concealed and profound, as indicated in Proverbs: ‘he shall understand the parable and the dark word’ (Proverbs 1:6). Similarly, in the Psalms, it is stated: ‘dark is the water in the clouds of the air’ (Psalm 17:12). For the one who rises to heavenly heights, forsaking worldly matters and aspiring, like birds, toward the purest atmosphere and all ethereal entities, becomes a cloud that receives the truth of God and often showers blessings upon the saints. Filled with great understanding, such a person harbors in their heart many obscured waters, shrouded in darkness, through which only Moses is able to pass, speaking face to face with God, of whom it is said: ‘Put darkness for His roof’ (Psalm 17:12).

The prophet demonstrates his kindness in all matters, not simply by creating a hymn but by allowing its content to unfold like a vision. He proclaims that "It is fitting to sing hymns continually to the everlasting and everlasting God," who embodies wisdom and understanding. This is the God who governs all creation with justice and goodness, revealing the fragility of human success through changing circumstances, thereby making His might evident to all. When He appoints rulers, He can easily remove them, and He grants authority only to withdraw it at His discretion. He is the source of both wisdom and discernment, bestowing these gifts not only upon everyone but especially upon those who seek to know Him. As He wishes, He unveils truths that have yet to be manifested, hidden in depths that have not been explored, while He, existing as an illuminating Light in unapproachable brilliance, perceives all that resides in darkness.
