He then depicts the tragedies that befall those in a city under siege: you will have a spouse, yet another will possess her; you will construct a home, but not live in it; you will cultivate a vineyard, yet will not gather its fruit; your body will lie fallen before you, and you will not be able to bury it. The subsequent statements carry the same message.
