4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

As a father, when his offspring depart from him, he may take one of them and set him upon his lap, not solely for that child's benefit but to encourage the others to seek the same affection from their father. In a similar manner, God engaged with the Israelites. Instead of cradling them, He upheld them with His strength and might, as the prophet attests. He granted them the treasured blessings, the temple, and the offerings they yearned for, along with assistance in battles, triumphs, glorious victories, the fertility of the land, and a bounty of harvests. Through these gifts, He distinguished them, which aroused envy among others. Yet, recognizing that perpetual satisfaction could lead to moral decline, He also disciplined them with afflictions.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Just as a mother hen gathers her chicks beneath her wings, the Lord envelops us in His protection, akin to an eagle sheltering its offspring. The scripture states, "Like an eagle covers its chicks." This illustrates how God, like a devoted father, safeguards us in the same manner a hen shields her brood from impending danger. Furthermore, we can express that He will overshadow you with His embrace, lifted high upon the cross, extending His arms to encompass us; in His wings, we find our hope.

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

Consistent with its nature of evaluating its young, the eagle nurtures and cares for those that display the traits of healthy descendants and the qualities of a sound nature, while it discards those that reveal signs of weakness indicative of a declining lineage, even from an early age.

Paterius of Brescia

7th centuryChurch Father

The Lord provides protection and sustenance for us, His humble servants. He envelops us not with something oppressive but with a gentle and caring embrace, as He reveals His compassion and shelters us under His wings like a mother bird.
