John Chrysostom

I will remain constant through your old age, and I will support you even as you grow grey. This assurance extends beyond merely old age; it echoes the truth that, just as He existed before Abraham, His existence transcends that time. I am your Creator, and I will uphold, sustain, and protect you. The prophet illustrates, as an expression of God's compassion, what the people specifically sought. “You Yourself are the cause of our suffering; You afflict us without compassion.” This contradicts His declaration, "I hear you," yet "you do not listen to Me." Although I am eternal, I observe you exchanging your deities. Why then would I not show you mercy? You weigh heavily upon Me, and your inclination to sin would have led to your destruction long ago if My care had not been upon you.

I am your Creator, I will listen—this means it is not by your own actions that you have achieved this, but I will again provide your salvation and deliverance. I have created you and will uphold, support, and protect you; this either serves as a rebuke or as a proclamation of truth.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Although a considerable amount of time has been unproductively dedicated to your care, and I observe that you remain quite obstinate, I will not forsake my own goodwill. I present myself to you and declare clearly: I am who I am, meaning I live and endure eternally, not as one who has a beginning and knows that existence may come to an end. I remain constant and unchanging; as you grow old, I will still be the same, for aging does not affect me as it does you; I am life itself and all-powerful. I have allowed the trials of conflict to come upon you as a result of righteous judgment, inflicting them as a consequence for those who have disregarded My glory. However, I will sustain you, that is, I will not abandon you, and I will restore those who are weary through my grace.

I will uplift you and bring you salvation. For I, who allowed you to fall into the hands of your adversaries, will bring you back into communion with Me and will free you from the chains of bondage. Thus, through a combination of both warnings and the promises of good, like a multifaceted remedy, He mends the hearts of those who have acted shamefully against Him, having turned away into iniquity through their extreme obstinacy. His desire is to rescue the lost and to liberate them from the grip of the enemy.

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

God will uphold you. O Lord our God, within the shelter of your wings (Psalm 62:8) we will discover hope, and you shall safeguard us, carry us. You will carry us, You will carry us, You will carry us, little ones, even into our old age, for our strength is derived from You. When we rely solely on our own, we find ourselves powerless. Our good is eternally rooted in You, and when we turn away, we plunge into corruption. Let us return to You at this moment, O Lord, lest we be brought low, for in You is the fullness of our good, and it is You Yourself. We need not fear that we will not return, even if we have stumbled deeply. Our home will remain steadfast in our absence, bound to Your eternity.

O intricate journeys! Alas for the audacious spirit that believed it could discover something superior by straying from You! It twists and turns, then lies on its back, then shifts to every side, moving in anguish. Yet it is only in You that true peace is attained. Thus, You are present, freeing us from our wretched misconceptions, guiding us along Your way, providing solace, and assuring us, ‘Run, I will support you and lead you, and there I will carry you.’

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Listen, O house of Jacob, and all remaining descendants of the house of Israel, whom I have nurtured since your inception. I have sustained you from your earliest days, and until your old age, I remain unchanged; even as you grow grey, I will uphold you. I have fashioned you, and I will carry you; I will provide for you and deliver you. To whom do you compare me, and with whom do you equate my likeness, fashioning idols from silver and gold, employing an artisan to create a god, to whom they bow and worship? They lift these idols onto their shoulders, placing them in position, yet they cannot move, nor can they respond when called upon in distress.

This message does not simply address Jacob or Israel in isolation; it speaks to the broader sorrowful state of the house of Jacob and the remnant of Israel, identified not merely by bloodlines but by their profound disconnection from divine truth. God teaches that He carried them from Egypt, symbolizing the nurturing love akin to that of a mother.

This description does not imply that the indescribable and incomprehensible majesty of God possesses physical attributes, but rather, it illustrates His love for us through accessible imagery. Psalm 109 echoes this sentiment, where the Seventy interpreters render: "Out of the womb before the day" (Psalms 109:3), but in Hebrew, the term is merehem, referring specifically to the womb. Here, it signifies not only from the womb but emphasizes a personal connection—meaning "from my womb.” The intent is clear: I, who have birthed you and sustained you, will protect you into your advanced years; not for my own sake, but to reveal to you that salvation comes through divine mercy. The Creator of all shows compassion to His creations, exemplified by the good shepherd who lays down his life for the flock. Conversely, the hired hand, whose sheep do not belong to him, flees at the sight of danger (John 10). Therefore, because I have created and nurtured, I will carry and uphold you.

The Seventy express this perfectly: I have borne you since your birth and guided you from your youth into old age. This highlights that those without knowledge of God, who honor mere images of man and beast, engage in empty worship, oblivious to God’s law, requiring prophetic correction. Thus, God asks them: To whom do you liken me, and with whom do you compare me? They have spent gold and silver to fashion idols, bowing down to their creations, which are unable to speak, move, or provide assistance. These truths are illuminated by the mercy of Christ, revealing what was hidden.
