Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Follow the commands given to you, and with the assistance of wisdom, prepare your heart to face both good times and bad. Do not be concerned with what your adversaries say or how others perceive you. A wise individual, much like a prudent person, disregards the whispers of servants and does not seek to overhear their gossip, for if he does, he will be perpetually unsettled by their idle chatter. Likewise, a discerning person is led by wisdom and remains unaffected by baseless rumors. Furthermore, there is another reason to disregard the judgments of others: your own conscience reminds you that you too have spoken ill of others and have often been uncharitable. Therefore, when others speak against you, you should extend forgiveness. At the same time, it is implied that one should not pass judgment lightly; those with faults of their own should refrain from criticizing the shortcomings of others.

Gregory the Wonderworker

3rd centuryChurch Father

and so that, feeling hurt in your spirit, you might be tempted to respond with numerous deeds.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The wise individual should focus on the ultimate purpose of life, making it essential to remember the fleeting nature and triviality of worldly pleasures rather than allow oneself to be misled by them. From the unimportance of earthly matters, the preacher warns against the dangers of discontent and impatience. When embarking on a situation, one should observe it thoughtfully and avoid hasty opposition; matters often conclude more favorably than they begin, thus it is wiser to patiently await their resolution. Grumbling stems from those who resist God's sovereign will.

Wisdom surpasses material wealth; it is the source of life for a man. We ought not to complain about evil but rather accept it as part of God’s plan, entrusting ourselves to His direction with patience. Neither the righteousness of one who believes himself to be virtuous nor the carelessness of the wicked can bring true happiness; only a profound reverence for God can do that, for human righteousness is inherently flawed. One should turn a deaf ear to slander.

The preacher's quest for wisdom did not yield the understanding he sought, as he discovered that temptation and sin are rampant in the world, illustrated by the figure of the woman, who symbolizes sin. In his journey toward godliness, he was occasionally inspired by men, never by women. It is a challenge that God allows, where finding the right path proves difficult, yet ultimately, it is human deception that leads one astray.
