Following his counsel, Haman was commanded by the king to carry out all that was decreed against Mordecai the Jew. After fulfilling his orders, he returned home filled with grief (Esther 6:10-14). In the king's address to Haman, Mordecai is identified as a Jew and, despite the earlier decree calling for the destruction of the Jewish people, is bestowed with the highest honor (v. 10). This shift in the Persian king's attitude towards the same group of individuals mirrors the unpredictable nature of Xerxes, evident in his treatment of people, his governance, and his overall conduct.
