Augustine of Hippo

The people did not navigate the sea aboard a vessel. However, in Your mercy, You guide this people, not relying on their own righteousness, which leads to self-glorification, but living by faith through Your grace; this is the people You have redeemed. For the Lord recognizes those who belong to Him. Behold, now you are assured of your strength—specifically that of Christ—because the folly of God surpasses human wisdom. Though He was crucified in frailty, He is alive through the power of God. Surely, you can be confident in your strength and in His sacred assistance. The renewal of His mortal body through resurrection and the fact that what is corruptible is clothed in incorruption empowers us, enabling us to trust in what lies ahead, allowing us to endure our present trials.

After baptism, we must journey through the wilderness—a life filled with hope—until we reach the promised land, the land of the living, where the Lord is our inheritance, the eternal Jerusalem. Until we arrive there, this life remains a wilderness filled with challenges. But in the name of the One who has triumphed over the world, the people of God conquer all.

Ephraem the Syrian

You have birthed humanity through the cloud and the pillar by Your grace... these are the ones whom You have rescued from Egypt.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

You have led Your people, whom You have rescued, O Lord, to the Promised Land, the very people You liberated from Pharaoh's grasp. In Your righteousness and fulfillment of Your promises regarding their inheritance of the land of Canaan, everyone can witness the faithfulness of Your word. Through Your actions, You have validated the message given about this Your people. The Israelites have consistently been Your chosen ones among all nations, called to uphold genuine worship of God. Most significantly, they belong to You, Your cherished inheritance, as You freed them from the bondage of Egypt.

Following the act of deliverance, the memory of the promise, which had already begun to materialize through Israel's liberation, comes to Moses' mind - ‘leadeth unto the habitation of Thy holy place. This phrase can be interpreted as referring to all of Palestine, which God promised to His chosen people, the priestly nation, as well as Mount Moriah, noted in Genesis 22:2. According to tradition, the temple of Solomon was eventually constructed there, later referred to as Zion. Mori-Yag, the discernment of the Lord, was a mountain esteemed in Israel's memory, intimately linked with the solemn covenants of the Lord (see Gen. 22:2, 16, 17, and related notes), following the offering of Isaac.
