Augustine of Hippo
He cleansed the arrogance of this world and the multitude of sins through which we served the adversary in our baptism. He set three horsemen upon chariots, representing the one who relentlessly pursued us with the dread of suffering, the shame of disgrace, and the terror of death. All these fears have been submerged in the Red Sea, for we were buried with Him through baptism into His death (Rom. 6:4), united with Him who was scourged, insulted, and crucified on our behalf. Thus, in the Red Sea, He concealed all our foes, who, by His sacrifice on the cross, atoned for our sins and consecrated baptism.

However, those who are cast into the depths like a heavy stone are only the ones entirely under the influence of the enemy, burdened by his yoke, regarding whom it is stated, “When the wicked comes into the depths of wickedness, he will not be glad” (Proverbs 18:3). These individuals lack faith in the possibility of forgiveness for their actions, and in their despair, they descend even further.
