Upon departing from the presence of the Lord, Moses veils his radiant face in front of the people, as he is not meant to reveal the profound insights given to him in solitude. Hence, the voice of God instructs that if someone digs a pit and fails to cover it, resulting in a bull or donkey falling in, he must compensate for their loss. Similarly, one who delves into profound truths must guard this knowledge from the unrefined hearts of listeners, for if either a righteous or unrighteous soul succumbs to temptation due to his teachings, he can be held accountable. This principle is echoed in the words spoken to the esteemed Job: “Who gave the cock a mind?”

Regarding the essentials, according to Leviticus 17:1-6, the flesh of an animal that has been killed was not permitted for consumption; therefore, the only gain for the negligent owner of the pit was the hide. Pits or wells, both found in desert regions and later in Palestine, needed to be sealed with a stone if the opening was small, or surrounded by a low stone wall, similar to practices observed in Asia today.
