The annual observance of the ‘Great Sanctuary,’ which signifies the atonement for sin, is outlined in Leviticus 16:16. The high priest, donned in white garments, after making a sacrifice for his own transgressions, presented two goats at the entrance of the tabernacle. By casting lots, one goat was chosen for sacrifice, while the other bore the sins of the people of Israel, and subsequently, it was released into the wilderness. The blood from the first goat was applied to the horns of the altar of incense (Leviticus 16:18). This ceremony occurred on the tenth day of the seventh month, Tisri, which coincides with late October.
