The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

An extraordinary creature emerged, possessing the head of an ox. Behold the ungrateful heretic, a slumbering Israelite, who claims that God was born and is subject to change. Is this your perception of the Almighty—fragile, wretched, and destitute? Absolutely not; such a notion is foreign to us. Rather, we affirm that the Father begets the Son, the Only Begotten God, the Complete of the Complete; these are the convictions held by Christians. Therefore, you who seem eager to delve into lofty mysteries, reflect upon yourself if you believe you possess understanding: how did an ox-headed figure emerge from gold that was cast into the flames? The metalworker crafted nothing, nor was there a furnace: how can you assert that the creature with an ox's head appeared? If you remain unaware of the matters at hand, how can you be so intently curious about that which is above? If you do not understand your own existence, how can you seek knowledge of what lies beyond?
