The entire nation came to understand the significance of the peril it faced. Like a willful child left to face the consequences of misbehavior, who sobs in its helplessness and begins to acknowledge that the authority it has opposed is essential for its survival, Israel suddenly recognized its own frailty in comparison to the powerful nations around it. It understood that, if abandoned to its own fate, it would only face the same bondage and degradation it had endured in Egypt. Yet within this people, destined for salvation, there remained a strong sense of national unity and aspirations for greatness grounded in divine promises.
