Jerome of Stridon
It is clear to all that the overall message of this passage refers to the eventual captivity of Zedekiah, the king of Judah, who was taken away alongside Jerusalem. However, some claim that Zedekiah, whose name translates to “righteous Lord,” represents Christ, who descended from heaven to take on human form, and that his experiences of captivity symbolize this. It is important to caution the discerning reader that while we interpret this without attempting to evade the matter, we do not endorse this view. A wicked ruler cannot symbolize the one who embodies all righteousness. Zedekiah’s capture by the Babylonians and Chaldeans, along with his subsequent journey from Jerusalem to Babylon, is documented by both the prophet Ezekiel and the prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 39) as well as the historical records in the book of Kings (4 Kings 25). Those who link his capture and wandering to the Lord Jesus Christ argue that this symbolizes a descent from heaven to earth.
