Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

These individuals will come to you and provide solace, for you will witness their actions and their intentions. This will occur after Jerusalem is struck by the sword, famine, ferocious beasts, and death. The righteous who are delivered shall bear sons and daughters in their likeness, and you will observe the deeds of their offspring and find comfort.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

He refers to death as an abrupt conclusion, the sword as a violent strike, and joy as a clear indication of scarcity, while referring to wild beasts as cruel oppressors and harsh places as sources of deep and painful suffering. In inflicting these judgments upon Israel, the Lord declares that He will spare some sons and daughters for salvation, so that all may recognize their considerable wickedness and comprehend the righteousness of the retribution; lest you, their fellow countrymen, witnessing their evil, accuse Me of being harsh in the punishment.

Furthermore, God proclaimed, "And ye shall repent of the evils which I have brought upon Jerusalem, all the evils which I have brought upon it," and they shall bring you comfort; for you shall perceive their actions and intentions, and you will understand that I have not acted without purpose in all that I have done in it, says the Lord God. Therefore, the Lord states, I will not destine all for utter destruction, but I will preserve some who are saved, so that through them everyone may recognize the fairness of the discipline that has been administered.
