The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

And I will transform their repentance, declares the Lord, the repentance of Sodom and its offspring, and the repentance of Samaria and its descendants. It is essential to grasp the nuances in Scripture's language; otherwise, one cannot comprehend its true intent. Thus, it exhibits this distinct quality, among many others, of addressing past events as if they are future occurrences, and future events as though they are past. Here, too, it conveys the past in the guise of the future. Sodom and her cities, along with Samaria and her territories, have turned away from Me; yet I have also turned away from them, states the Lord, and have brought punishment upon them for their transgressions. I will transform your repentance from their midst. You will endure your suffering, and you shall be shamed for all that you have committed in My wrath. As they have acted, so shall you also experience, says the Lord, and face consequences for every sin against Me.
