The Lord spoke to me, saying, "And you, son of man, will you not judge the city of blood and reveal all its detestable practices? You shall declare, ‘Thus says the Lord God: a city that sheds blood within itself, hastening its own ruin, and creating idols in its heart, polluting itself! Your own blood that you have spilled has caused your sin, and by your handmade idols, you have defiled yourself, bringing your days closer and shortening your years.’ Thus, I have delivered you to the nations for scorn and mockery among all lands. Those who are near and those who are far from you will triumph over you, O polluted one, once exalted, now brought low. See, the leaders of Israel have used their power to spill blood within you.

Fathers and mothers have been dishonored among you; the stranger has been wronged, and orphans and widows have been oppressed in your midst. You have disregarded My sanctuaries and profaned My Sabbaths. You have acted violently and consumed food on the mountains, engaging in vile practices. Wretchedness and depravity have been committed among you. The shame of fathers has been made known, and the unclean have been exposed among you. Each man has defiled his neighbor’s spouse, and a father-in-law has committed shameful acts against his daughter-in-law, while a brother has dishonored his sister, the daughter of his father, within your territory. Gifts have been taken from you to shed innocent blood. You have embraced excess and riches, accusing your neighbors for profit, and forgotten Me, declares the Lord God. Behold, I have splashed My hands upon your wickedness and the bloodshed among you. Will your heart remain steadfast, will your hands be strong in the day that I bring upon you? I, the Lord, have declared it and will make it happen. I will scatter you among the nations and across the lands, bringing an end to your uncleanness, and will expose you before the nations. You shall know that I am the Lord. And you, son of man, judge the city of blood, pointing out all its abominations, so it can acknowledge the just punishment it faces, for it has brought upon itself its own destruction through countless acts of violence. The greatest sin is this: you have honored idols instead of God and worshipped your own creations, causing the time of reckoning to draw near—one long foretold but delayed for your chance at repentance. Yet, because of your unrepentant heart, you have stored up wrath for the day of judgment. Therefore, I will hand you over to the nations to be derided and mocked by all surrounding lands, both near and far, who will triumph over you in your defilement, once esteemed, now fallen. You have lost your purity, once renowned for goodness. The higher your status, the greater your fall. Let me summarize a few of your transgressions: Your leaders did not judge with fairness but wielded power to shed innocent blood. Some have dishonored their fathers and mothers, contrary to the commandment, ‘He who curses his father or mother shall surely be put to death’ (Exodus 21:17). They oppressed strangers and foreigners among you, adding to their burdens instead of providing refuge. Orphans and widows have suffered because of your injustices. You have disregarded My holy places and profaned My Sabbaths, blurring the line between the sacred and the profane, treating the day set aside for divine service with disdain. Liars and murderers have walked among you, who have blasphemed God and acted treacherously. They have feasted upon the mountains, manifesting pride and arrogance toward the Lord, openly engaging in wickedness typically hidden in darkness. The shame of fathers was made bare among you, daughters-in-law have been violated contrary to God's Law, and the impurity from your monthly cycles has been shamed without fear or restraint, indulging in the lust for their neighbor’s spouse. Even more grievously, the father-in-law has succumbed to inappropriate desire for his daughter-in-law, and brothers have shown no regard for family rights, defiling sisters. Gifts were received to shed the blood of the innocent, turning the dire needs of the poor into a means for personal gain and showing treachery to their own kin for selfish ends. But you have done this, O Jerusalem, because you have forgotten Me. Remembering God keeps you from shameful acts. Therefore, I manifested as a wrathful Lord, splashing My hands due to your selfishness and bloodshed, urging you to recognize whether you can withstand My anger, either in spirit or in action. For I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will accomplish it. When you, O Jerusalem, are taken, I will scatter you among the nations, like chaff blown by the wind. But My goodness is vast, and My severity will turn to mercy. I will restore you to purity, making you beholden to the eyes of the nations, so that you may understand I am the Lord. If we follow the translation of Symmachus and Theodotion, which states: ‘and I will smite you with wounds’ and ‘and I will make you unclean before the nations,’ this must be understood with greater severity, yet is countered by the promise of cleansing from impurity, which signifies the return to holiness. I have assessed both translations to avoid excess in the text.

God addressed Jerusalem once more, instructing the prophet to act as a judge and admonish it for its lawless actions. He refers to Jerusalem as a deluge of blood due to the numerous unjust killings within its bounds. Once again, He uses the same designations, exclaiming, O city, whose blood flows among you, as your time approaches, and who builds idols within itself, thus defiling itself; in other words, you have brought these calamities upon yourself, O city, by harboring these thoughts, bringing them to fruition, tainting yourself with them, and being filled with the innocent blood of the slain. The Prophet called this the time of watchfulness.
