Ephraem the Syrian

Assess the city stained with blood, revealing all its transgressions. The Lord revisits the faults of Jerusalem when He declares, ‘Judge the city of blood.’

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

God addressed Jerusalem once more, instructing the prophet to admonish it for its wicked actions, much like a judge delivering a verdict. He refers to Jerusalem as a "hail of blood" due to the numerous unjust killings. The reason He reiterates these names and proclaims, O city, engaged in shedding blood within your own borders, your time is drawing near, and crafting idols for yourself, thereby defiling yourself; you have brought these calamities upon yourself, O city, by harboring these thoughts, bringing them to fruition, and defiling yourself with them, becoming saturated with innocent blood spilled unjustly. The prophet recognized this moment as a time of vigilance.
