Thus declares the Sovereign Lord: Look, I will hand you over to those you despise, to those from whom you have sought fulfillment. They will treat you with disdain and strip away all that you have worked for, leaving you exposed and filled with disgrace. The shame of your unfaithfulness will be laid bare. Your sins and your unfaithfulness have led you to this moment; you have pursued other nations, polluting yourself with their idols. You have followed in your sister's footsteps, and I will pass her cup into your hands. The Lord God says you will drink deeply and broadly from your sister's cup, enduring mockery and scorn because of its vastness. You will be inundated with inebriation and sorrow—the cup overflowing with grief and calamity from your sister Samaria.

You will drink it fully, consuming every last drop, and suffer the consequences of it. I will bring an end to her gatherings and her months of celebration. For I have declared it, says the Lord. Therefore, the Lord God decrees, because you have forgotten me and neglected my presence; you will carry the weight of your sins and your unfaithfulness. It is better for Jerusalem to experience hostility from the Assyrians and Chaldeans than to rely on Egypt. Instead, they should face those who despise them for their punishment, enduring until they are fully consumed by them. In their repentance for past transgressions, they will be cleansed through discipline, losing all they gained through unfaithfulness, recognizing their vulnerability and shame, and realizing that these afflictions did not come from the Lord but as a result of their own unfaithfulness, as they engaged with the aforementioned nations, serving their idols.
