Jerome of Stridon
In the earlier vision, we learn that it was revealed to the prophet during the fifth year of Jechoniah's exile, specifically in the fourth month on the fifth day. Regarding the vision we now wish to discuss, it occurred in the sixth year of the same king, in the sixth month on the fifth day. This indicates that the events described took place one year and two months later, suggesting either an interruption in the prophecy for that duration or that the entire fourteen months provided continuity to the preceding message. Notably, this prophecy occurred in the sixth year, sixth month, and on the fifth day, figures that allude to the creation narrative and to the material senses, which focus on worldly concerns without heed to heavenly matters.

This observation is fitting, as the address is directed to the Jewish elders. Seventy of them carried censers while twenty-five turned to worship the sun in the temple, while the prophet remained in his dwelling, distancing himself from the throng. The elders gathered before him, either eager to hear the prophet's words or trying to entrap his speech. It is specifically noted that these elders refer not to the entirety of Israel, namely the ten tribes held captive previously, but instead to those from the tribe of Judah, who had been taken into exile alongside Jehoiakim.
