The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

You were without fault in your days, but as a result of your numerous acquisitions, your greed caused you to fall into sin.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

You walked in righteousness throughout your life, from the time of your creation until iniquity was discovered within you. This reflects the state of the devil before his downfall. Concerning humanity, it is stated, “No man is clean from filthiness, though he live one day on the earth” (Job 14:6). The devil, being a spiritual being, was initially without fault; however, as he allowed the desire for evil to take root within him, he chose a path of rebellion.
