Ezekiel 28:18Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thy iniquities, and by the iniquity of thy traffic: therefore I will bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, to devour thee, and I will make thee as ashes upon the earth in the sight of all that see thee.

Let those who are faltering ask, What sanctuary did the wicked sovereign of Tyre possess? Yet they will find nothing to cite. The one of whom we now speak, when he was among the holy Archangels, was a participant in all that is sacred. However, he himself desecrated the sanctuary through a poor choice, and in his insatiable desire, he lost the gifts bestowed upon him and led humanity to suffer the same fate. For he, who was fashioned in the likeness of God, was deceived by his treacherous words and, yearning to be God, also destroyed that which could have reflected the image of God. “And I will bring fire out of thy midst.” This applies to both the instigator of evil and the king of Tyre who embraced it; for both provided justification for their own punishment.

Similarly, the Prophet Isaiah spoke to the Jews, “Behold, all of you make fire, and strengthen the flame: walk by the light of your fire, and by the flame which you kindle” (Isaiah 50:11). Thus, He states, I will take fire out of thy midst, and this fire shall consume thee, meaning that I will use your transgressions as the means to prepare your punishment. And I will reduce you to dust on the earth before all who witness. These truths pertain to both of you. Even humanity, having fallen to dust upon its own soil, became dust, and the adversary, desiring to reign over all creation, was cast down by our God and Savior and is crushed like dust by the faithful.
