3 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

I will render judgment between the ram and the ram. I will distinguish between the Jewish leaders who conspired with Caiaphas and the faithful people of God, who have been united from different nations into one congregation that honors the Crucified Savior.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

The Lord will no longer permit them to be victims, and He will distinguish between one sheep and another, not based on the titles that leaders take pride in, but rather between individuals, according to their service to the Lord.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

With your ribs, your shoulders, and your horns, along with every vulnerable aspect, until I am driven away and my flock is ravaged by all who pass by; then I will rescue my sheep, and they shall not be taken. He outlined all that the sheep possess, including their shoulders, horns, and ribs, exposing the unjust rule of the powerful; yet he assures protection for the flock. I will bring judgment among the sheep, setting apart the sheep from one another. I will render justice, not ignoring those who have been wronged, but delivering retribution to those who have inflicted harm. Following this is the promise of collective salvation for all.
