Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Every person who walks the earth and sees a human bone will make a gesture with it, indicating that the scattered remains will be interred by those who encounter them. The phrase, "He shall make a sign with her," can be interpreted differently; one who creates a memorial—a sign—who encounters an individual lost in paganism or Judaism, instead of using physical symbols, will share the words of the Holy Scriptures. Through these sacred texts, they aim to bring about the listener's reproof and restoration. Thus, if the recipient is open to the message, they will swiftly enter the realm of the living.

Theodoret of Cyrus

I will take on their name, and on that day, I will be exalted, says the Lord God. Those appointed will traverse the land to give proper burial to those who perished during the flight, and they will call out for them. Anyone who passes through the land and comes across a human bone, seeing a marker related to it, will ensure that it is buried in the wilderness, the numerous graves of Gog. For an extended period, they will move through the land, attending to the unburied deceased; and travelers who discover a bone will gather stones as a memorial, signaling to those tasked with the burial to retrieve it and fulfill their duty alongside others.
