The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

It is decreed that the gates oriented towards the east are to remain closed for six days of the week, but shall be opened throughout the Sabbath. When the priests make offerings on behalf of the high priest, he will stand at this gate. After the offering is completed, he will bow in the vestibule and depart, while all the people gathered before this gate will worship God on both the Sabbaths and the new moons. The high priest is responsible for presenting the burnt offering on the Sabbaths, for he is referred to as an elder by the prophet. He is also to account for the number of priests and instruct on what should be offered during new moons. The term for the offering he declares is semidalah, translated as manaah by the Syrian interpreter.

He further instructs that those entering the outer court for worship should proceed through the northern gate and exit through the southern gate, or vice versa, to ensure a smooth flow in entering and exiting as they offer their worship to God. The presence of the high priest is essential during this time to maintain an atmosphere of great reverence. On Sabbaths and during other festivals, it is mandated that the east door must be opened for all worshippers. If the high priest wishes to present a voluntary sacrifice from his surplus on any given day, he is permitted to open this door, as it is stated that the offering he presents shall be akin to the sacrifice made on the Sabbath.

Should the high priest grant a portion of his designated land to any of his sons, that individual will have perpetual rights to the property. However, if the land is given to a servant, the servant will enjoy ownership only until the summer of release, at which point, in the year of the Sabbath, the inheritance shall revert to the high priest. This arrangement is because the land is allocated to a single priestly lineage, and it is inappropriate to cause harm to the people by depriving children of their familial inheritance, leaving them without land, by redistributing other lands to the priest. Hence, the rightful heir to the land assigned to the priests will always be the clan.
