Jerome of Stridon
And you shall allocate this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel, granting it as a heritage to yourselves and to the foreigners who have settled among you and borne children among you. Let them be regarded as naturalized citizens among the children of Israel, sharing in the inheritance with you within the tribes of Israel. In whichever tribe the foreigner resides, there you shall assign him his inheritance, declares the Lord God. This allocation reveals to us (and challenges the pride of the Jews) that there is no division between Israel and the Gentiles.

If the land is apportioned to both foreigners and the native-born among the people of Israel, it is clear that the same inheritance belongs to both the Gentiles and the Jews, provided they turn towards the service of the God of Israel. This belongs fundamentally to Christians, as the Jews possess the letter of the law, while we embrace its spirit. They adhere to the written texts, and we focus on their application. Furthermore, as was done by Moses, the land is distributed by lot, and as we have mentioned, this allocation is determined according to the will of the Lord; every territory is shared between the strangers and Israel, with each tribe receiving an inheritance as commanded by the Lord God.
