John Chrysostom

What makes water restorative? It is because it promotes well-being. “Behold, you are healed; sin no more, lest something worse happen to you” (John 5:14).

In discussing the phrase “The Lord reigneth, let the earth rejoice” (Ps. 96:1) and the statement “when He shall have delivered up the kingdom to God and the Father” (1 Cor. 15:24), as well as the sacrament of baptism, Hales references an anonymous author. This author is also attributed with the works titled “On the Serpent” and “On Seals.” Dupin suggests that Bishop Severian of Gavala may have penned these, while Lampe attributes them to the Blessed Theodoret of Cyrus, noting that the exegesis resembles that of Bishop Markell of Ancyra.

Ephraem the Syrian

The stream that flows into the valley to the east and descends toward the north symbolizes the teachings of the apostles. This message was delivered to the Gentiles and brought them joy.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The prophet declares that the waters of the river flowing into Galilee, situated to the east, will descend into the barren land and reach the sea, connecting to the waters of the exodus. This historical account can be verified; for the message of salvation first spread from Galilee and moved to the untamed and pagan regions, far removed from righteousness, ultimately reaching the tumultuous seas inhabited by barbaric tribes. Furthermore, the prophet proclaims that the waters will be consecrated; as they will be enriched with Hellenic and mythical teachings meant to serve divine proclamation, and these sanctified waters will bring healing to many.
