The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Those who manage to flee the besieged city and retreat to the wilderness will succumb to disease; those nearby will fall to the swords of men; and those encircled by an enemy army will perish from hunger and deprivation. In all these situations, the anger of God will be realized, so that survivors might recognize Him as Lord. Furthermore, anyone who strays from the Church will swiftly face death from disease. He who believes himself to be wise and cautious, if not vigilant, will be struck down by the enemy's sword. Those who are satisfied with mere belief, remaining in the Church like silent creatures, will not achieve any good works; likewise, the one who fails to emulate the ant, which prepares and stores its provisions during harvest, will die from starvation. In all these instances, the wrath of the Lord will be fulfilled.
