Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

You shall repay them who are few in number, and you shall envelop me in your robes. I will calm my anger towards them, and I will find solace. I will assuage my fury against them and provide them with comfort. This refers to those who survived the widespread devastation of the children of Israel, remaining safe and later returning alive to Jerusalem.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The Divine Nature is devoid of passions and completely lacking in anger, yet it uses terms understood by humanity to describe corrective measures. It is stated, My wrath shall pass away against them, signifying that it will cease. When they come to realize through their experiences that I am God and the Supreme Authority, and that I have administered discipline due to their transgressions, then I will find solace, for this is the very reason I have brought about their correction.
