2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

When I shatter the unfaithful hearts of those who turn away from Me, their faces will bear the marks of torment. This means that as a consequence of their transgressions, a severe disaster will befall them, dulling their hearts and causing their faces to reflect the sorrow brought on by the tribulations they will experience during the attack of their adversaries.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The remnants among you will recall Me, though they were taken into bondage. Thus, the discipline that God administers serves a purpose; it fosters repentance. Mourn for their hearts that have strayed and turned away from Me, and for their lips that have turned to immorality through their actions, for they shall lament for the wrongs they have committed in all their abominations. They shall recognize that I, the Lord, did not instruct them to engage in such evil deeds. They will wholeheartedly repent for abandoning Me and for their affection for the worship of idols, which I liken to immorality. They will come to understand that the punishment I imposed was neither unjust nor without purpose; for justice reveals wickedness, and in turn, benefit leads to repentance.
